Understanding flares
Flares are important safety devices used in petrochemical facilities to burn excess hydrocarbons, as an alternative to releasing gases into the atmosphere. Flaring can occur during startup and shutdown of any of our facilities for maintenance and during unplanned operations, such as power outages.
A different technology
The low-profile flares at the two U.S. Gulf Coast Petrochemicals Project sites use different technology compared to traditional flares. They are designed to sit on the ground, reduce noise and reduce visibility.
During a flaring event, neighbors will be able to see a glow emanating from the structure, not flames, and hear a low rumbling sound.
