The Woodlands, TX (March 9, 2016) - Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP (Chevron Phillips Chemical) has been awarded a bronze President's Volunteer Service Award for contributing more than 5,000 volunteer hours to Junior Achievement (JA) during the 2014 - 2015 school year. The national award was presented during the recent 2016 JA Volunteer Summit in New York City.
The U.S. President's Volunteer Service Award is a presidential recognition program that was created in 2003 to honor individuals and corporations that contribute a significant amount of time to volunteer service.
Each year, Chevron Phillips Chemical supplies more than 100 volunteers to teach JA programs in schools, from traditional programs for primary grades to JA Finance Park for middle and high school students.
"Junior Achievement programs support our company's goal to create jobs and economic growth in the communities where we do business," said Peter L. Cella, President and CEO of Chevron Phillips Chemical and member of JA of Southeast Texas Board of Directors. "When students gain practical real-world experience like they get at JA, they are better equipped to make the transition into adult life and become strong contributors to their communities."
In addition to volunteer service, Chevron Phillips Chemical has donated more than $10.6 million to JA and other education-based programs in the U.S. since the company's inception in 2000.

Mostly recently, the company served as the premiere sponsor of the Houston-area JA Inspire program, which seeks to provide career exploration opportunities for eighth grade students. The program was developed to support Texas House Bill 5 which passed in 2013 to improve public education by expanding curriculum options. As a result, eight graders across Texas must now select a high school endorsement track, such as STEM, before entering high school.
"We have a growing need to fill positions in fields such as engineering, operations, maintenance and more," said Cella. "Participating in JA Inspire gives us a chance to educate students about opportunities in the industry and the endorsement tracks to support the jobs that match their interests."
